  • This study of six Eastern Arc forest reserves around the Uluguru Mountains in Tanzania investigates the "policy promises" of Joint Forest Management (JFM): Improvement of forest quality, household livelihoods and forest governance. While there are signs of improved forest quality, JFM leads neither to improved livelihood opportunities for the majority of villagers, nor improved forest governance. JFM provides preferential forest access to the village elite. For poor families with limited land ownership, forest closure due to JFM reduces the ability of livelihood diversification. A disjuncture between the created Village Forest Committees and existing village governance bodies prevents local accountability and transparency with regard to forestry matters. This allows those who benefit to reinforce a regime that keeps them in control. Apart from responsibility to patrol, the communities have not been provided secure and predictable rights by the state that makes a difference in terms of livelihoods or empowerment. Thus, JFM in the study sites is rather "pretence" than a genuine devolution of power from the state forest department to the forest adjacent communities.

  • In the many parts of the world there is growing popularity of community based forest management. Forest user groups (FUGs) have emerged as new institutions in the community to carry out activities for the protection and sustainable management of forest resources. FUG members participate in decision-making processes and have been implementing forest operational plan to fulfill their forest products needs, improvement of forest condition, participate in poverty reduction and local employment. This book examines the effectiveness of FUG institutions in implementing their constitutions and operational plans. The participation of users in managing CF is crucial for sustainability. In this regard, the institutional arrangements of the FUGs and the incentives for participation in forestry activities are assessed because these affect the whole CF management process. Forest user's participation in forest resources management with appropriate technical know-how is driving factor to sustained supply of forest products and generates income and employment. The author critically examine the institutional capacity of FUG and its impact on forest management and community development.

  • Sundarban Mangrove Forest in Bangladesh is playing a significant role in local and national economy and is providing protection to the coastline as well as to the indigenous people. During the past decades and also in recent time this forest was heavily disturbed by human intervention in many aspects. As a consequence the resources of the forest are fragmenting, shrinking and declining, which in turn leads to an increasing failure of satisfying increasing demands both at local and national levels. Therefore accurate and continuously updated spatial information is needed for optimizing forest management and environmental planning on both levels to support the fulfillment of urgent needs of sustainability of the development of the forest ecosystems. The present study is an investigation examining the underlying causes of deforestation, forest cover change and its environmental impact. Remarkable changes of the forest cover have been occurred from 1997 to 2006. In the present study, dense forest cover have been changed drastically and converted into light forest in 2006. The total 1.17% forest cover area is reduced.

  • ABSTRACT Recent attempts to mitigate global climatic change have brought forestry based carbon sequestration into sharp focus due to its potential to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Although a number of studies have been done on carbon stock estimation, the National Park carbon stock has not been properly addressed. This paper was conducted to estimate the carbon stock in forest of the Gambella National Park with 76 plots in the categories of riverine and terrestrial forest. The total mean carbon stock in forest part of the National Park was 394.85±24.34ton/ha. The carbon stocks in each pool exhibited distinct patterns between the forest Stratum (riverine and terrestrial). The total carbon stock in the riverine forest and forest land/wood land was 454.51±26.01ton/ha and 324.89±17.25 ton/ha respectively. The results of LULCC (Land use land cover change) analysis indicated that the forest and woodland decreased at an average rate of 120,470.6ha. This study concluded that despite the rapid decline in the forest land and woodland coverage, the existing forest/wood land has a huge potential sequestration of carbon for mitigation of climate change.

  • Forest soils are the foundation of the entire forest ecosystem and complex, long-term interactions between trees, soil animals, and the microbial community shape soils in was that are very distinct from agricultural soils. The composition, structure, and processes in forest soils at any given time reflect current conditions, as well as the legacies of decades (and even millennia) of interactions that shape each forest soil. Reciprocal interactions are fundamental; vegetation alters soil physical properties, which influence soil biology and chemistry, which in turn influence the growth and success of plants. These dynamic systems may be strongly influenced by intentional and unintentional management, ranging from fire to fertilization. Sustaining the long-term fertility of forest soils depends on insights about a diverse array of soil features and changes over space and time. Since the third edition of this successful book many new interests in forest soils and their management have arisen, including the role of forest soils in sequestering carbon, and how management influences rates of carbon accumulation. This edition also expands the consideration of how soils are sampled and characterized, and how tree species differ in their influence on soil development. Clearly structured throughout, the book opens with the origins of forest soil science and ends with the application of soil science principles to land management. This new edition provides: A completely revised and updated Fourth Edition of this classic textbook in the field A coherent overview of the major issues surrounding the ecology and management of forest soils Global in scope with coverage of soil types ranging from the tropical rainforest soils of Latin America to the boreal forest soils of Siberia New chapters on Management: Carbon sequestration; Evidence-based approaches and applications of geostatistics, GIS and taxonomies A clear overview of each topic, informative examples/case studies, and an overall context for helping readers think clearly about forest soils An introduction to the literature of forest soil science and to the philosophy of forest soil science research This coherent overview of the major issues surrounding the ecology and management of forest soils will be particularly useful to students taking courses in soil science, forestry, agronomy, ecology, natural resource management, environmental management and conservation, as well as professionals in forestry dealing with the productivity of forests and functioning of watersheds.

  • Participatory forest management approach has been in practice in Kenya for close to 14 years since it was first piloted in Arabuko Sokoke forest in 1997 (KEFRI, 2002). In Kereita forest, the approach has been in practice for over 5 years. Despite having been in place for that long, there are still a lot of misgivings as to whether the PFM approach really contributes to the livelihoods of the Kereita forest adjacent communities. This suspicion is further grounded by the fact that forest related conflicts continued to affect the area. In addition there has been very limited documentation on the benefits accruing to the communities as a result of their participation in PFM. The purpose of this study was therefore to assess the impacts of participatory forest management on the livelihoods of forest adjacent communities in Kereita Forest of Kiambu district. This is as indicated in KEFRI (2002) that there is need for research to be carried out on PFM activities and their impacts on livelihoods.

  • Tropical forest ecosystem are characterised by high species diversity compare to other forest types. Very vast area under forest of India falls in same category while the state entirely falls in this category. In addition, maximum area of state falls in the arid and semi-arid tracts which also represent unique sub-forest type, Tropical Desert Thorn Forest". Such forest area represents endemism and site specific distribution of plants which harbour attention of conservation scientist. On the other hand, the infrastructure and industrial development leads to the loss of such unique and important biodiversity. Hence in present book an attempt was made to know the distribution, associated species of threatened plants of Kachchh district. Here an emphasis was also made to know the various threats to its existence and suggested management and conservation measures.
